The most important thing when you are starting out is not to let the nay-sayer steal your dreams. The World is full of such negative people. They have a thousand reasons why your dreams will not work and they are ready to share them with you at the drop of a hat. You just have to believe in your ability and make your dreams come true. For that, you have to love, respect and trust yourself.
The silkworm builds his cocoon with great love and infinite patience. It is a beautiful structure; but the silkworm cannot get out of it and ultimately dies in it. The material world, too, is like a beautiful cocoon. We build it with great affection and imprison ourselves in it without realizing that there are much more beautiful things outside. Let this academic year show us that there are much more beautiful things outside the material world and let this year show us the path to watch the miracles of life.
So friends, remember that you are special, no one can play your role better than you.
I wish you all a very happy academic year.

Good thoughts, Sandra. I liked the analogy of the silkworm. It also tells something about us, too. Sometimes we are too preoccupied with ourselves that we do not go beyond ourselves and engage with others and the world outside of us. We can call it self-centered.
The Silkworm dies in the cocoon!?
I thought it broke out after a while into a butterfly unless humans used it to harvest silk. They don't die because they don't want to go out, the others just don't want them to reach their potential. Wikipedia is on my side :P
Aside from that, I'd say you did pretty well. You didn't seem as nervous as most people on the stage are. Keep it up, I guess.
Beauifully crafted speech, which is crisp and indulges the audience rather than boring them. also # Amita, it is the message which is important not the fact here, please be bright enough to understand that..
